It’s the first week of fall term and Ava Chung ’29 and Lilli Kerluke ’29 are aiming their cameras at a bookshelf in the Frederick R. Mayer Art Center. Their assignment is to experiment with the camera’s manual settings. They adjust the aperture, then the shutter speed, then the ISO, to see how their choices affect the outcome.

Both students take photos on their cell phones every day, but Kerluke says, “I want to perfect my craft and learn more about what goes on inside the camera (more than our eyes can see)!”

Closing that gap is what Adam Hosmer, an art instructor and the chair of the Art Department, loves about teaching ART 205: Photography I: Composing Concepts. “So many students come to the class not really knowing what it’s going to be,” Hosmer says. “Then they realize that they already have a fairly developed visual language when it comes to photography. They start to see themselves as artistic in a way that they didn’t before.”
